To train this skill, the Compassion practice gives you two robust tools. The first practice uses Notice-Shift-Rewire to build a daily habit of compassion. The second practice is a form of meditation designed to cultivate the skill of compassion, a technique called loving-kindness, or metta.

How to do it: To build this daily habit, use leaving your home each day as your cue to Notice-Shift-Rewire to compassion. Notice each time you leave, whether you are headed to work or just headed to the store to pick up groceries. Shift by redirecting your attention to compassion. As you walk out the door, think of all the people you will come in contact with that day, and take a moment to feel compassion toward them. You can do this by flooding your body with a feeling of love for these people or by thinking to yourself, âMay everyone I come in contact with today be happy.â Rewire by taking a few seconds to savor this flood of loving-kindness.
Why practice compassion as you leave the home each day? Leaving the house is a key moment of transition. It represents a shift from a space that you control (your home) to a space that you have almost no control over (the office, the highway, the subway car, and so on). By experiencing compassion at this threshold to the outer world, you will improve your ability to handle the challenging situations that may arise along the way: parking tickets, reckless drivers, irritating coworkers, and on and on.
